Celtic welcomed Atletico Madrid to Parkhead on Wednesday evening in what turned out to be a feisty affair. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with both teams more than up for the challenge.
With a red card, numerous yellows, and reluctance from Diego Simeone to shake Brendan Rodgers’ hand post-match, there was an inherent sense of high temperament in the match.

Elsewhere in Group E, however, it was even worse. Feyenoord welcomed Lazio to de Kuip on Wednesday evening and ran out 3-1 winners to go top of the section. It wasn’t the result, though, that drew the attention of many.
Indeed in the entirety of the match, there were a colossal twelve yellow cards handed out. This marked a new record for cautions given in Champions League group-stage matches.
Celtic weren’t involved here, but the record does show the sheer competitiveness of Group E. Things will only ramp up going into the second half of the campaign as all four teams look to secure Europe after Christmas.
