Brendan Rodgers Refuses To Give Up On Celtic’s European Ambitions

Celtic were left wondering what else they had to do on Wednesday to win in the Champions League. Pedro’s last-gasp winner broke supporters’ hearts but after the match, manager Brendan Rodgers refused to concede that his side’s Euro ambitions couldn’t be met.

Previously, Rodgers has openly stated that his goal for his team in Europe this campaign is to be playing in it after Christmas. Whatever form that comes in doesn’t matter – the Irishman just wants knockout football at Parkhead in the new calendar year.

Wednesday’s loss to Lazio may have slightly derailed those hopes, but the treble-winning boss has not backed down. He said (Glasgow Times): “Listen, there are four games to go, but I am under no illusions. I know the level that the three teams who are in the group with us are at.”

Next up, the Celts face a double-header with Atletico Madrid before a trip to Rome to once more take on Lazio. From those next three Champions League matches, the Hoops must get some points on the board.

Both teams, however, are of a high level. It will be arduous for the Bhoys, but their manager insisted they won’t let up. Rodgers said: “I have always been realistic, I have always felt that if we could get into Europe after Christmas then that is what we would be fighting for. I think we will get better, but we know the challenges of the teams that we will play. That won’t stop us fighting and working.”

Up against Atletico next, the Spaniards will provide a different challenge to the Celts than what Lazio and Feyenoord have done so far. Diego Simeone will put out a well-drilled side and it will be difficult for the hosts to take something from the game.

No silly mistakes can be afforded, but that match is long in the distance. The focus for the Scottish champions this weekend will be on Kilmarnock as they aim to maintain their strong position as league leaders.
