Opinion: Centre-Back Jersey Is Now Liam Scales’ To Lose

Celtic won by three goals to nil away at Livingston on Saturday afternoon. Despite going down to ten men, the Bhoys came away with the points thanks to goals from Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley, and Daizen Maeda.

It wasn’t just going forward where the Celts prospered, though, as at the back, Brendan Rodgers’ men were well-drilled. Central to such solidity was Liam Scales.

Since injury grasped hold of the champions’ squad, the Irishman has been terrific. At the heart of the defence, Scales has failed to put a foot wrong and against Livi’, was once more a class act.

Scales Celtic

The fact he is left-footed helps his team massively. It allows a more dynamic approach to playing out from the back, and the number five is the only player in his position at the club who possesses such an attribute.

The 25-year-old has made four league appearances so far this season. In each, he has played ninety minutes and kept a clean sheet. Because of his recent form, it would be impossible to drop the ex-Aberdeen loanee when players like Phillips, Carter-Vickers, and Maik Nawrocki come back to fitness. The centre-half shirt truly is Scales’ to lose.
