Celtic Accused of Ignoring Scotland International

This week more than ever, we have seen the lack of homegrown talent at Celtic, with the Champions League squad including the likes of Mikey Johnston, Scott Bain and James Forrest.

Several promising Scottish players, whom Celtic could’ve signed, including the likes of Aaron Hickey, Josh Doig and Lewis Ferguson have exited the SPFL to pursue flourishing careers in England and Italy.

Ryan Porteous, having made his move from Hibs to Watford in January, has now emerged as a regular for Scotland, impressing in the English Championship.

Former Rangers defender, Craig Moore, has claimed that Celtic has ignored homegrown talent, naming Porteous as a player who’s been overlooked.

He said: [Go Radio]

“Porteous is one of probably a few that both Rangers and Celtic have probably ignored in terms of the domestic scene. I think it has been overlooked, there’s no doubt about it.

“You look at Doig, you look at Ferguson, you look at Shankland now currently. Probably at the start of the season, I was still doubting whether Shankland could play for one of the top two. I think what he has shown this season is, yes I believe he can.”

Porteous isn’t Champions League quality, and will likely never develop into that quality of player, so it’s hard to agree with that example. However, the likes of Hickey, Doig and Ferguson are great examples of Celtic possibly turning their noses up at players just because they play in Scotland.

With Hickey already starring in the Premier League, it won’t be long before Doig and Ferguson follow in his footsteps.
