Celtic have tabled a significant bid for centre back Maik Nawrocki. The young Pole looks like he could be on his way to Glasgow and such a move will have consequences for certain members of Brendan Rodgers’ team.
Currently, Celtic have four first team centre backs in Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Stephen Welsh and Yuki Kobayashi. Adding another player that predominantly plays in this position means the Hoops’ will be top-heavy at the back.
Due to this, one or two centre halves may have to be offloaded, especially if Nawrocki is brought in to challenge and play alongside Carter-Vickers and Starfelt. This certainly looks to be the case because of how highly rated he is and the money that is reportedly being shelled out on him.

Kobayashi has not been the most convincing since joining Celtic in January. The Japanese, however, still has a number of years left on his Parkhead deal. Already fairly down the pecking order, Nawrocki’s arrival would further threaten his place in the squad. A a loan or permanent move away from Glasgow may be best for Kobayashi if the Pole does indeed join.
We also have Stephen Welsh. The 23-year-old has been at Celtic his whole career but has been on the fringes of the first team over the past few years. If Kobayashi leaves amid the arrival of Nawrocki, Welsh would be fourth choice at centre back. His presence adds extra numbers to the heart of defence as going with just three centre halves for the season would be a tad risky.
Having the Scot also adds to Celtic’s homegrown player tally for Europe. Despite reported interest from the continent, it would be ideal for Celtic to have Welsh around if Nawrocki arrives and Kobayashi departs.
Such rotations in terms of players and squad roles are common around this time of year. Celtic would be upgrading the centre back position by bringing in Nawrocki as well as switching around certain players’ roles and futures.
