Callum McGregor naturally took the reins from Scott Brown as Celtic captain in 2021 and has excelled as Ange Postecoglou’s voice on the park.
McGregor has been nothing but consistent over the past few seasons, setting a prime example to anyone of how a Celtic skipper should play and act.
He is a key clog in Postecoglou’s free flowing system and when speaking to PLZ Soccer, former Hoops captain and club legend Brown was full of praise for his old teammate.
The now Fleetwood boss said:
“There’s probably not been a better player in Scotland over the past two, three years than Callum McGregor.
“He’s been there, he’s done that, he has the understanding and hopefully once he goes to lift the trophies he’ll enjoy himself.
“He’s worked extremely hard.”
This is high acclaim for McGregor although it comes as no surprise.
The Scotland international stands out every week for Celtic and does not sometimes get the praise of a Jota or Kyogo yet his contributions are as significant.
The attributes and qualities he brings always go unnoticed when he’s not playing.
Moreover, Brown talked about how McGregor always keeps going:
“Cal’s a fantastic football player as well and he keeps that team ticking over and he’s got that willingness to win games and it’s that relentlessness as well.”
It is fair to say Celtic will miss McGregor more than several other players when he eventually departs or retires.
What he offers both on the pitch and off it is almost irreplaceable and this weekend, Celtic fans will be looking forward to seeing him lift yet another title.
