Celtic walked away from Ibrox on Sunday afternoon with all three points thanks to an arrowed Kyogo Furuhashi finish. The Bhoys went top of the table with the victory, although there was no shortage of controversy in the match.
The hosts had the ball in the back of the net inside the first minute but it was rightly ruled out for offside. Just under half an hour later, Kemar Roofe bagged, and it initially looked as though the goal was going to stand.
VAR intervened, however, and referee Don Robertson ruled it out for a foul in the build-up. Celtic centre-half Gustaf Lagerielke was clearly tripped up by Cyriel Dessers, yet many have claimed it was the other way about and rather Lagerbielke kicked the Nigerian forward as he went to hit the ball.
These claims are ridiculous and a decision that was made in the most recent New Year Glasgow Derby proves why. Inside the box on 52 minutes, Fashion Sakala went down. He looked to have stood on the foot of Carl Starfelt, which could’ve easily warranted a Celtic free-kick.

The Swede, though, was adjudged to have tripped the forward up, and a penalty to Rangers was awarded.
This decision shows precisely why the correct one was made in the most recent derby. Although both players did appear to crash into their opponents, each wasn’t in control of the ball and was stopped from doing so, thus, foul.

Going forward, it will be hoped correct decisions such as the weekend’s one will be continually made by the officials. VAR certainly helped on this occasion, although its usage is a hot topic among many supporters.
